Emily has experience teaching Cello in various settings, including primary and secondary schools and private teaching.
Pupils range from 4 years old to adults, beginners all the way to grade 8.
As well as being a peripatetic music teacher at Surrey Arts, Emily is also a tutor for the Cello section in the Reigate String Orchestra.
She has also worked as a composer and performer in recording studios, as well as wedding quartets/bands, orchestras and actor musician theatre productions.
Emily also has experience of working with adults and children with additional needs and various learning methods and styles. She believes it is vital to work with the individual to create a tailored lesson.
Classical and orchestral background
Emily was classically trained from the age of 6 and worked her way up to grade 8. She was a frequent lead string player at Reigate String orchestra, a sectional player for the Redhill Sinfonia and was the cellist for a Baroque trio that toured France in 2017.
Although Emily had a huge passion, she often found that she felt trapped in the classical world and the musicians around her were often too heavily focused on the results of their exams as result, forgetting their creativity, musicality and overall enjoyment of what led them to music in the initially. This resulted in Emily rediscovery her love of music and an exploration of new genres.
Stringbabies education
Emily has also taught teeny tiny children (as young as 4-5yrs) in groups as she is very inspired by Kay Tucker (practitioner of ‘Stringbabies') and was taught and trained by Yvette Madden (lead professional string player and area manager of Surrey Arts). The ethos of Stringbabies includes music games, imaginative play, improvising through which technique, theory, aural skills are all embedded.
Actor Musician training
Emily also trained as an Actor Musician at Rose Bruford drama school so has a strong range of musical repertoire and loves to teach a full range of styles and genres.
This training also consisted in experimenting with improvisation in response to the action on stage, this strengthened her creativity within her playing and composition.
Emily also enjoys working with the Cello in interesting ways such as using it to creating soundscapes for theatre and film both using the instrument's range of sound, but also by using the body of the instrument and various creative bow techniques. She then developed this by recording these sounds through POG machines, delays and loop pedals. This was such a success that she went on to provide a soundscape that represented space which became a live soundtrack for a children's production, called 'Luna' at the Theatre Hullabaloo.
